True story. A RAMQ office in Montréal, an appointment booked to take the picture for my health card.
- Salut
- en: Hi
- pt: Oi
- Bonjour
- en: Hello
- pt: Bom dia
- Comment puis-je vous aider ?
- en: How can I help you?
- pt: Como posso ajudar?
- Je parle un petit peu français. Vous parlez anglais ?
- en: I speak a tiny bit of French. Do you speak English?
- pt: Eu falo um pouquinho de francês. Você fala inglês?
- Oui
- en: Yes
- pt: Sim
- I'm here to take the picture for my health card
- pt: Vim tirar a foto do meu cartão de saúde
- Are you booked? We only see people who booked an appointment
- Yes, I am
- pt: Sim, tenho
- fr: Oui, j'en ai un
- When?
- pt: Para que horas?
- fr: À quelle heure ?
- 11:15 AM
- pt: 11h15
- fr: 11 h 15
- You're 5 minutes late
- pt: Você está 5 minutos atrasado
- fr: Vous avez 5 minutes de retard
- Désolé. There were two other government offices around. I got lost.
First time here
- en: Sorry. There were two other government offices around. I got lost. First time here
- pt: Desculpa. Tinha outras duas repartições do governo por perto. Eu me perdi.
Je me suis perdu. C'est ma première fois ici
- Can you give me the letter you received?
- pt: Pode me dar a carta que você recebeu?
- Sure. Here's my driver's license and a photo of the letter from the
government
- pt: Claro.
- Yes
- pt: Sim
- fr: Oui
- I need the paper
- pt: Preciso do papel
- fr: J'ai besoin du papier
- What do you mean?
- pt: Como assim?
- fr: Comment ça ?
- I need the physical letter
- Why?
- pt: Por quê?
- fr: Pourquoi ?
- For the QR code
- pt: Por causa do QR code
- fr: Pour le code QR
- But you can scan the QR code from an image
- I need the paper
- pt: Preciso do papel
- fr: J'ai besoin du papier
- I don't have the paper anymore. I don't understand how this makes
sense. I'm here. I'm proving my identity with my driver's license. I
could only book this appointment after receiving the letter. I'm
showing you the digital version of the letter and the QR code. You can
scan it to double-check. Everything is surely documented in your
system. I'm a software engineer. The database has everything. And I
bet there's a way for you to check the data.
- pt: Eu não tenho mais o papel. Não entendo como isso faz sentido. Eu estou aqui.
- The rule is the paper
- pt: A regra é o papel
- fr: La règle, c'est le papier
- I don't have the paper anymore
- pt: Eu não tenho mais o papel
- fr: Je n'ai plus le papier
- You will need to call again and get a new one
- You must be kidding me. They take two hours to answer the phone in
that thing. (I am suspicious the guy has a Portuguese accent. From
Brasil or Portugal.) Vous parlez portugais ?
- en: You must be kidding me. They take two hours to answer the phone in that thing. (I am suspicious the guy has a Portuguese accent. From Brasil or Portugal.) Do you speak Portuguese?
- pt: Só pode ser brincadeira. Eles levam duas horas para atender o telefone nesse negócio. (Desconfio que o cara tem sotaque português. Do Brasil ou de Portugal.) Você fala português?
- fr: Vous voulez rire.
- en: Yes, a little
- pt: Sim, um pouco
- D'où viens-tu ? Du Brésil ?
- en: Where are you from? Brazil?
- pt: De onde você é? Do Brasil?
- Sim
- en: Yes
- fr: Oui
- Porra, vc é brasileiro, mano?
- en: Damn, you're Brazilian, bro?
- fr: Putain, t'es brésilien, mon gars ?
- Sou
- en: I am
- fr: Oui, je le suis
- Tá aqui há quanto tempo?
- en: How long have you been here?
- 10 anos
- en: 10 years
- fr: 10 ans
- Então vc fala português pra caralho! Tá de sacanagem. Poxa, eu fiquei
50 min no metrô. Longe pra caralho. Eu tô tentando tirar esse plano de
saúde há um tempão. Desenrola isso aí, pelo amor de Deus. Dá um
jeitinho aí, mano, na brotheragem
- en: So you totally fucking speak Portuguese! You're messing with me. Man, I spent 50 min on the metro. Far as hell. I've been trying to get this health plan for ages. Sort this out, for God's sake. Bend the rules a little, bro, brother to brother
- I can't
- pt: Não posso
- fr: Je ne peux pas
- Funny that you answered in English
- Silence
- pt: Silêncio
- fr: Silence
- Ok, bro. Have a nice day. You are truly a Canadian robot. Congrats.
- pt: Beleza, mano. Tenha um bom dia. Você é mesmo um robô canadense. Parabéns.
- fr: OK, mon gars. Bonne journée. Vous êtes vraiment un robot canadien. Félicitations.
I start laughing like the Joker from Batman. Feels surreal. I turn to the people waiting in line:
Hey guys, I've been trying to get health insurance from Quebec since April. Do you know what's funny? I moved to Canada more than 3 years ago and I've never had a family doctor! Hahahah. I tried in BC and Ontario. Now, I am trying to just get the card. Worst experience ever. All this BS is to get access to healthcare basically for emergencies. If you actually need something not urgent for them (but important for you), drive 2 hours south and pay. Canadians love to brag about their free healthcare compared to the American system. Too bad it doesn't work in reality - unless you are about to be dead. Especially for immigrants. If you got your family doctor 10y ago you are good! Enjoy them
